GABORONE, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- A 41-year-old man was killed by an elephant in northern Botswana Monday, police confirmed Wednesday.
The incident happened around 7:30 pm (1730 GMT) near Nokaneng in the Okavango District, policeman Samuel Kgomo confirmed in an interview.
The deceased sustained serious injuries all over the body after being attacked on his way to the cattleposts and was later found dead by a passerby.
Since taking office in April, Botswanan President Mokgweetsi Masisi has been working towards lifting the ban on animal hunting to relieve him of the blame for the over population of the animal, which has been encroaching into human settlements to search for water and food.
The ban has now been lifted after consultation with communities and the hunting season is to open soon.
Meanwhile, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) rejected a proposal to open trade to clear existing stockpiles of ivory.
Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe, which have high elephant populations, submitted a joint proposal to trade in tons of stockpiled ivory, but were defeated in a vote.
The three countries take up more than 70 percent of the world's total elephant population.
