LIMA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Over half a century, China has made substantial strides across the board under effective party leadership, said Luis Villanueva, general secretary of the Peruvian Communist Party (PCP).
"In the past 50 years, China has made significant progress, especially in applying socialism with (Chinese) characteristics, where the results of economic success are distributed to all sectors and all ethnic groups" across the whole society, Villanueva has said in an interview with Xinhua.
Economic growth in China has been reflected by higher standards of living across the country, said Villanueva, who is also a distinguished union leader at Peru's Federation of Civil Construction Workers.
China has made great achievements, above all in social development, said Villanueva. "By implementing socialism with Chinese characteristics, they are trying to resolve the problems of inequality in China."
Social development goals are met through proper leadership and policy-making of the Communist Party of China, he noted.
The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) promotes equitable development by strengthening infrastructure that connects leading trade centers, benefiting countries along the way, he said.
"Through the initiative, China offers all countries on this trade route an opportunity for fairer and more equal development," said Villanueva, adding "Peru is already part of the global project."
The two countries also signed a memorandum of understanding at the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing in April.
Peru is currently the second largest Latin American destination for Chinese foreign investment, with some 18.4 billion U.S. dollars invested in its mining and energy sector.
Regarding the U.S.-initiated trade friction with China, Villanueva said it seems to be devised to disrupt the Asian country's development process.
"From a political perspective, we have on several occasions expressed our support for Beijing ..." Villanueva said, praising China's efforts in championing multilateralism.
The PCP general secretary also advocated developing countries to learn from China's tailored socioeconomic development model and gradually form their own.
"The founder of the PCP, Jose Carlos Mariategui used to say that Peru should not implement cookie-cutter socialism, but a heroic creation of the Peruvian people," Villanueva recalled.
