GABORONE, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's capital Gaborone opened a symposium on Thursday to uncover ways to create more consistency in standards of regulation for health professionals.

The two-day meeting called the Southern African Development Community Medical and Dental Regulatory Association Symposium (SADC-MDRA). Its establishment came about after health ministers from the SADC countries met in Eswatini in 2016 for close collaboration and mutual exchange of information between member states, said the country's minister for labor and employment Tshenolo Mabeo at the opening ceremony.

"The core objective that governs the establishment of the SADC-MDRA can be achieved if all apply scientific knowledge in steering the activities of the regulatory bodies, since there is a need for the region to share information pertaining to best practices in the medical profession, so that no country in the region lags behind," Mabeo added.

The minister said a significant number of the country's healthcare workforce comprises non-citizens, a situation that likely exists in other regional countries, illustrating that the mobility of human resources is a phenomenon in the region.

Present at the opening ceremony were representatives from the host country Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Other member states are expected.
