SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Saturday issued an alert that airlines and passengers may expect delays or travel plan disruptions as a result of a key reconstruction project at the airport.

"Runway 28L will be closed for 20 days for scheduled reconstruction starting today. Please check with your airline for the latest information on flight status," SFO tweeted.

Runway 28L, one of the airport's busiest airstrips, will be shut down for repairs between Sept. 7 and Sept. 27, which will affect short-haul flights, including some domestic and international flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on its official website Saturday morning that the construction is "causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 3 hours and 32 minutes."

The runway repair project will involve removal of the surface paving for installation of a new base layer, local TV outlet KPIX5 said Friday.

"At the peak of construction activities, up to 600 truck deliveries are expected in a 24-hour period," it quoted an SFO statement as saying.

The reconstruction project will cost a federally-funded aid of 16.2 million U.S. dollars.
