MADRID, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Spain continued their march towards the finals of the 2020 European Championships with a comfortable yet unspectacular 4-0 win at home to the Faroe Islands.

The win gives Spain six wins from their six qualifying games and makes them clear favorites to book a place in next summer's finals.

The Faroe Islands travelled to Spain as bottom of their qualifying group, but defended stoutly in Sporting Gijon's El Molinon Stadium, before Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a pass from Mikel Oyarzabal.

Rodrigo did most of the work himself in the 49th minute before doubling Spain's lead with his second goal of the game, but after that goal, despite the home side controlling most of the ball in the Faroe Islands' half, a lack of urgency saw them fail to create clear chances.

That changed in the closing minutes with the introduction of Borussia Dortmund striker Pablo Alcacer.

Once again the former Barca and Valencia forward, who scored against Rumania on Thursday, showed his instinct in front of goal with two first touch finishes to add luster to the score.

First he flicked home a pass from Thiago Alcacer in the last minute of the game and then in injury time he got his head to a cross from left back Juan Gaya to make it 4-0, which three minutes earlier had looked unlikely.
