ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed after a boat capsized in Ethiopia's Oromia regional state located in the central part of the country, an Ethiopian official said on Tuesday.

Guta Bulcha, Head of West Shoa zone, Oromia regional state, said the accident happened on Monday afternoon when a boat with 12 people on board transporting passengers on a local river capsized, reported state media outlet Ethiopia News Agency.

Bulcha said heavy rains caused the local river to overflow causing the boat to capsize.

He further said several of the boat passengers have been rescued, with rescuers looking for potentially more survivors.

In January, at least 12 people were killed after a boat capsized in Ethiopia's largest lake Tana, located in Ethiopia's northern Amhara regional state. Police blamed overloading for the tragedy.
