BANGKOK, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Thai Customs Department under the Finance Ministry on Tuesday revealed that Thai customs have cracked down evasion of duty payment on imported goods estimated at more than 90 million baht (2.9 million U.S. dollars) in the past 11 months of the 2019 fiscal year.
Customs spokesperson and consultant Chaiyut Khamkhun said Thai customs are also monitoring suspicious behavior of cabin crews who bring in access, untaxed brand-name products to re-sell in Thailand.
Thai customs will also install 23 x-ray conveyors at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in the first quarter of 2020 to scan through all the incoming luggage, Chaiyut said.
Tada Chumchaiyo, director of the Customs Investigation and Suppression Bureau said that in the 2018 fiscal year, crackdowns on smuggling of the brand-name goods to evade duties were estimated at 60 million baht (1.95 million U.S. dollars).
Anyone who gives tip-offs to the authorities will be rewarded 20 percent of the value of the seized items, sold at auction, Tada added.
