NAY PYI TAW, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Vice President U Henry Van Thio called for participation of the public in fighting against human trafficking when the country marked the seventh anniversary of Myanmar's Anti-Trafficking in Persons Day on Friday.

The vice president said that the government has taken multifaceted approach to combat trafficking in persons as part of the efforts under the country's five-year plan focusing on four areas -- policy and cooperation, prevention, prosecution and protection.

Myanmar enacted the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law on Sept. 13, 2005, and steps were underway to amend the law in line with the present situation in the country.

According to figures from Myanmar's Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, 502 traffickers were charged in connection with 176 cases while 254 people were victimized.

Under the 2005 Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, people who smuggle women and children were sentenced to at least 10 years or up to lifetime sentence or fine.

Assets and property involved in human trafficking cases will be confiscated in accordance with the Anti-Money Laundering Law.
