China's smartphone shipments down 2.8 pct in August

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's smartphone shipments dipped 2.8 percent year on year in August to 29.6 million units, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

Last month, smartphones made up 95.9 percent of all mobile phone shipments in the country, said the report from the CAICT, a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Overall mobile phone shipments fell 5.3 percent in August to 30.88 million units, with mobile phones from Chinese brands accounting for 93.8 percent.

In the first eight months of this year, China's smartphone shipments decreased 4 percent from a year ago to 240 million units, according to the report.
