TUNIS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- EU observers have so far seen a "calm atmosphere and a good respect" for Tunisia's election procedures in almost all polling stations, said European Parliament Vice-President Fabio Massimo Castaldo on Sunday.

"The 100 observers of the EU have found, so far, a calm atmosphere and a good respect for the election procedures in almost all polling stations," said Castaldo, who also heads the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM).

During a press conference held at the polling center of the primary school at the rue de Marseille in Tunis, the head of the EOM pointed out that since the start of the poll at 8:00 a.m. local time, no major offense has been identified.

"All materials are available and the polling station staff has shown professionalism in managing the electoral operation," he said, noting that the EU EOM will attend all stages of the process including closing of polling stations, counting and publication of results.

"The EU attaches fundamental importance to consolidate democracy in Tunisia and we want this election day to be a great celebration of democracy as in past elections," the EU official added.

It should be noted that the EOM team, composed of about 100 observers and electoral analysts, are present in 41 polling stations across 27 regional constituencies of Tunisia.
