12 wounded as suicide bombing rocks Afghan eastern Jalalabad city

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people have been confirmed injured as a suicide bombing, followed by gunshots occurred in Jalalabad city, capital of Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday.

According to provincial government spokesman Attaullah Khogiani, the bombing occurred outside the office of electronic National Identity Card distribution in the city.

Twelve wounded persons have been taken to hospital for medical treatment and 12 others have been rescued from the compound attacked by the insurgents, he said.

Khogiani said that the security forces had cordoned off the area and cleanup operations are underway to secure the area.

Earlier an official on the condition of anonymity said that a suicide bomber blew himself up next to the gate of the office of the electronic National Identity Card in Jalalabad city at around 01:30 p.m. local time, triggering gun battle.
