THE HAGUE, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Around 100,000 people on Saturday attended the commemoration of the Operation Market Garden 75 years ago at the "Ginkelse Heide" near Ede in the Dutch province of Gelderland.

Special attendants this year were Dutch Princess Beatrix and the British crown prince Charles, who walked arm-in-arm after the laying of a wreath.

Operation Market Garden, the allied offensive against the Nazi German occupier in the Netherlands, started 75 years ago this weekend.

In Arnhem, the Battle of Arnhem was commemorated on Friday in the Eusebius Church.

On Saturday, more than a thousand paratroopers imitated the parachute jumps at the "Ginkelse Heide," with which in 1944 the strategic bridges over the Dutch rivers had to be conquered by the Allied Forces in World War II. That action failed and Arnhem turned into a battlefield.
