RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro set off on Tuesday for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and address the opening ceremony, which will mark his first time to attend the event.
"Tomorrow we will open the UN General Assembly, where we will have the opportunity to present to the world the Brazil we are building," Bolsonaro tweeted on Monday.
According to national news agency Agencia Brasil, Bolsonaro's speech will focus on defending the government's efforts in the Amazon after raging wildfires in the region captured global headlines in the last few weeks.
He will also address the government's economic measures, public security and anti-corruption efforts.
For some time, it was speculated whether Bolsonaro would be allowed by his medical team to attend the UNGA, as the president has just undergone a hernia operation earlier this month. But his doctors said he is well enough to attend.
Before his speech at the UNGA, Bolsonaro is set to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
