WINDHOEK, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Namibian celebrities will take part in a Gender Based Violence (GBV) knockout boxing tournament to raise awareness about violence against women and children, event organizers said Wednesday.

In an interview, Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) spokesperson Erasmus Nekundi said the event is not only a boxing fight, but also a fight against social change with emphasis on GBV.

"We feel it is about time we act against GBV as it has now become a national concern. It is a critical issue with statistics going up every year.

"As all the personalities will be throwing punches over a total of 24 rounds on the night, we want to raise awareness that these punches must never land on helpless and vulnerable women and children but rather on a punching bag, Nekundi said.

According to police statistics, Namibia records over 200 GBV cases every month.

The tournament is expected to raise over 1.5 million Namibian dollars(100,000 U.S. dollars) which will go to organizations dealing with GBV.

The Tournament which will take place on October 12 in Namibia's capital Windhoek will see over 14 celebrities competing.
