Chinese embassy in Kenya celebrates 70th anniversary of PRC founding

NAIROBI, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese embassy in Kenya on Thursday organized a reception to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China.

Wu Peng, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, senior government officials, diplomats and citizens from all walks of life attended the ceremony whose highlights included speeches, performances and exhibitions to showcase vitality of ties between Beijing and Nairobi.

"Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people, united as one, are striving to move forward, from poverty and weakness to prosperity and strength," said Wu.

"We have created miracles one after another in human history," he added.

The diplomat said that China's monumental strides in diverse spheres like agriculture, science and technology in the past 70 years has benefitted other countries including Kenya.

Wu singled out Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), clean energy projects, scholarships and deepening cultural exchanges as a reaffirmation of robust China-Kenya bilateral cooperation.

Tom Amolo, Political and Diplomatic Secretary of Foreign Ministry of Kenya, said Kenya has drawn inspiration from China's socio-economic and political rejuvenation that has been realized in the last 70 years.

He said that China and Kenya share a common vision of promoting peaceful development and respect to multilateralism.

Joyce Msuya, deputy executive director of UN Environment Program (UNEP) lauded China's support for multilateral environmental governance that is key to advance ecological renewal globally.

The embassy held an open day prior to the main celebration to showcase Chinese projects that have transformed lives in the East African Nation.

Likewise, the Chinese companies highlighted their corporate social responsibility programs that have lifted the living standards of disadvantaged groups like orphaned children.

A key highlight of the open day was a charity painting auction organized by the Chinese embassy in Kenya to raise funds for Nairobi based rescue centers for abandoned children.

Kenyan artists and students from Confucius Institutes in the country's leading universities staged thrilling performances during the celebrations.
