BAGHDAD, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's embassy in Iraq on Monday held an exhibition of pictures to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

China's Ambassador to Iraq Zhang Tao delivered the opening speech at the exhibition that included pictures celebrating the achievements of China as well as the improvement in its economy and the living standards of its people.

"Over the past 70 years, we have been persistent in adhering to an independent and peaceful foreign policy and to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs (of other countries)," Zhang said.

A number of high Iraqi officials, foreign diplomats and figures attended the ceremony that was held in Baghdad.

Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Hameed al-Ghazi said in his speech that after the victory over the Islamic State (IS) militant group, Iraq is now heading to the process of reconstruction with help of international firms, including Chinese companies.

China and Iraq have been enjoying flourishing relations in recent years that yielded increasing investments by Chinese companies in various fields in Iraq, most notably in its oil and electricity sectors.

The Chinese-Iraqi ties are expected to see more progress in the near future after the recent visit of Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to China and the signing of a number of agreements with Beijing.

Earlier this month, the state-run al-Sabah newspaper quoted China's Ambassador Zhang as saying that the "Chinese side attaches great importance to developing relations with Iraq, and looks forward to seizing the opportunity of this visit to make joint efforts hand in hand with the Iraqi side to further consolidate and deepen Chinese-Iraqi relations."

The volume of the trade exchange between China and Iraq exceeded 30 billion U.S. dollars in 2018, according to Zhang.

"China is the biggest trading partner of Iraq, and Iraq is the second biggest oil supplier to China, and the fourth biggest trading partner of China in the Middle East," he added.
