DHAKA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Bangladeshis in the first three months of the current 2019-2020 fiscal year (July 2019-June 2020) remitted home 4.51 billion U.S. dollars, more than 16 percent higher than a year earlier, a central bank official said Wednesday.
The remittance in September stood at 1.47 billion U.S. dollars, up by 23.67 million U.S. dollars from the previous month's level, said the banker who preferred to be unnamed. Bangladesh remittances hit an all-time high of 16.40 billion U.S. dollars in the past 2018-2019 fiscal year (July 2018-June 2019).
Officials said remittance has been steadily rising since the announcement of a 2.0 percent incentive on remittance receipts in June this year to encourage the expatriate Bangladeshis send home more money through formal channels.
Most of the remittances come from the Gulf countries, according to the banker.
