TRIPOLI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Libya's High Council of State urged Wednesday the security services to release the council's member Mustafa Al-Treki who was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday.

"The Higher Council of State demands all concerned security services to spare no effort to find the whereabouts of the kidnapped (member) and release him from the armed gang," the council's information office said in a statement.

The council held the kidnappers responsible for Al-Treki's safety and security, considering such incidents "serious violation that threatens the essence of the desired civil state."

According to local media, Al-Treki was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen from his home in the western city of Zawiya, some 45 km west of the capital Tripoli, and taken to somewhere unknown.

The council said the kidnappers are likely to be members of the east-based army, which has been leading a military campaign to take over Tripoli and overthrow the UN-backed government.

In May, unidentified gunmen kidnapped the council's member Mohamed Abu-Ghamja from his home in southern Tripoli and took him to an unknown location. Enditem
