RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo and Uruguay international midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta will be sidelined for at least a month due to a knee injury, the Rio de Janeiro club said on Thursday.
Arrascaeta suffered ligament damage during Flamengo's 1-1 draw with Gremio in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores semifinal in Porto Alegre on Wednesday.
Scans confirmed the injury on Thursday and the 25-year-old will undergo keyhole surgery in the coming days, ruling him out of the return leg at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium on October 23.
In addition, Arrascaeta will miss Uruguay's back-to-back friendlies against Peru later this month.
In a statement, Flamengo said that left-back Filipe Luis also suffered a strained medial ligament during Wednesday's match, though the former Atletico Madrid player is expected to require only physiotherapy.
Arrascaeta has scored 16 goals in 45 matches for Flamengo since joining the club from their Brazilian rivals Cruzeiro in January.
