TUNIS, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed called on Tunisians to participate in voting in the parliamentary elections, Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported Sunday.

After fulfilling his voting duties, Chahed expressed in a press statement that the elections would have a strong citizen participation, unlike in the first round of the presidential election held on Sept. 15, where the participation rate did not exceed 50 percent.

"In these parliamentary elections, all Tunisians assume the responsibility of deciding a new future for the country," TAP quoted Chahed as saying.

The polling centers for the parliamentary elections opened on Sunday in 24 provinces of Tunisia.

More than 15,000 candidates from different parties, party coalition or independent candidates are competing for the 217 seats in the Assembly of People's Representatives (parliament).

A total of seven million people are eligible to vote on Sunday's elections.
