MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez said Monday that back-to-back friendlies against Peru will help his team prepare for the South American zone's 2022 World Cup qualifying tournament.

The Celeste will host Peru in Montevideo on Friday before a return clash in Lima four days later.

"It will be an opportunity to compete and one of the objectives will be to win," Tabarez told reporters. "Peru have made a lot of progress and they will be tough opponents. These friendlies are fundamental to our development."

Uruguay will be without strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez for the fixtures due to fitness problems. Cavani is suffering from a hip injury and Suarez has been given dispensation to receive treatment in Barcelona on his troublesome right knee.

"We always hope that Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez are available but this time they are not and we must cope," Tabarez said.

The South American zone's 2022 World Cup qualifiers will begin in March 2020.
