MAPUTO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) confirmed Tuesday that four suspects indicted for murdering an election observer are agents of a Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) subunit in Gaza province.

Anastacio Matavel, a senior civil society coordinator for the Oct. 15 general election observation, was shot dead by a group of armed men on Monday morning in Gaza's provincial capital of Xai-Xai.

The murderers then fled and later crashed their car. Two of them died at the scene of the accident, one was arrested and the others are still at large.

Orlando Mudumane, spokesperson for the PRM, said the crime was "perpetrated by five individuals, including four PRM agents, assigned to the UIR subunit on duty in Gaza, for Special Operations Group (GOE) and one civilian, duly identified in the records."

As a result, the Gaza provincial commanders of the UIR and the GOE have already been suspended and a commission of inquiry was set up to present a detailed report within 15 days.

The PRM spokesman said the police vehemently condemned the criminal conduct of these agents and sympathized with the bereaved family.
