GABORONE, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,044 Batswana have registered to vote in the Oct. 12 external voting for Batswana residing outside the country.

Osupile Maroba, Botswana Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) principal public relations officer, has said in an interview on Wednesday in Gaborone that election staff had already left the country to prepare for the Saturday elections at the 36 external voting polling stations around the world.

This year's Botswana general elections, which are conducted every 5 years, will take place on Oct. 23. They are the 11th to be held since independence in 1966. The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been winning the elections ever since.

This time around 6 parties will be contesting the elections, but only three; BDP under the incumbent president Mokgweetsi Masisi, Umbrella for Democratic Change under Duma Boko and Alliance for Progressives under Ndaba Gaolathe contesting for the presidency.

Regarding preparations for Oct. 23, Maroba said that IEC was currently busy with printing of ballot papers and training of poll staff.
