BEIRUT, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Around 1,000 Syrian refugees returned home from Lebanon on Thursday, the National News Agency reported.

Syrians from different cities in Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, Zahle, Sidon and Tripoli, returned to their homeland by bus with the help of Lebanese General Security.

Representatives from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, supervised the refugees' return to Syria.

According to the Lebanese authorities, the number of refugees who had returned to their homeland from Lebanon reached 172,046 by March 19.

More than 1 million Syrian refugees are registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million.

The flow of Syrian refugees to Lebanon has weighed heavily on the country's economy and infrastructure, prompting Lebanese officials to urge the international community for support in guaranteeing the return of Syrian refugees.
