Chinese shares end higher Thursday

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.78 percent to end at 2,947.71 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.38 percent higher at 9,638.1 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges expanded to 420.6 billion yuan (about 59.47 billion U.S. dollars) from 365.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,171 to 244 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,765 to 311 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the digital currency sector led the gains, with shares of Julong Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Port and shipping shares also notched solid gains, as shares of China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. hiked by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Bucking the upward trend, shares of titanium dioxide companies spearheaded the losses, with Anhui Annada Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. falling 2.22 percent to 8.38 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.75 percent to close at 1,666.97 points.
