11 killed, dozens injured in bus accident in central Nepal

KATHMANDU, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 persons have been killed while dozens injured in a bus accident in Nepal's Sindhupalchowk district Friday morning, police authorities said here.

The accident occurred when the ill-fated bus en route to capital city Kathmandu from Sipatar of Sindhupalchowk slipped off the highway and fell few hundred meters down. The accident occurred at Indrawati rural municipality in the district located in Province 3.

According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Madhav Prasad Kafle based in district police office, six people died on the spot while remaining five lost their lives after being taken to the hospital.

The officer informed that the injured have been undergoing treatment at local health centers, hinting that the death toll may increase. Police is yet to ascertain the identities of all the deceased.

Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Army and the locals were involved in the rescue operation.

It has been estimated that around 70 passengers were travelling in the bus including those in the roof. They were returning to Kathmandu from parental homes in villages after celebrating the country's biggest festival Dashain.

Over-crowded vehicles, poorly-maintained roads and shoddy conditions of public vehicles have significantly led to frequent road accidents in recent years in Nepal.

According to the data of Nepal Police, more than 22,000 lost their lives in the past 10 years alone in road accidents.
