COPENHAGEN, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Denmark's center-left Social Democrat government is proposing to expand legislation to increase police power in surveillance online, Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported on Sunday.

Danish police currently possess the power to use online agents during investigations regarding serious crimes, where there is a sentence of six years' imprisonment or more.

What is new about the current proposal, according to Jyllands-Posten, is that investigations will be extended for criminal cases involving child pornography, sales of stolen goods, drugs, weapons and explosives on the Internet where current sentences are less than six years of imprisonment.

The proposal comes as part of an entire government security package that contains a total of 16 initiatives presented by Minister of Justice Nick Haekkerup on Sept. 25.

Danish police, under the new proposal, will have the power to create a false profile on an Internet forum and engage in dialogue, therefore being able to communicate directly with suspected criminals who hide behind false profiles and operate in hidden networks.

The government's initiative is a reworking of proposals made by previous center-right administration earlier in the year which failed to pass into law at the time due to the Danish general election in June.
