DHAKA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Uber drivers in Bangladesh capital Dhaka went on strike Monday.

Belal Ahmed, general secretary of Dhaka Ridesharing Drivers Union, told journalists that they have long been asking Uber to bring down the commission rate to 12 percent from the existing 25 percent.

Ahmed claimed some 7,000 drivers joined the 24-hour strike from Sunday midnight to reveal their eight-point charter of demand which also include ensuring security of the drivers.

However, ridesharing app Uber's Dhaka office Monday issued a statement in this regard, saying "We regret the disruption caused to the rider and driver-partner community, due to a small group of individuals. We strive to provide reliable and safe transport options to get around the city and hope to minimize any distress caused."

"We are committed to providing reliable, convenient and safe transport options to our riders, while providing access to flexible income opportunities for our driver partners," it added.

It further said Uber always prioritizes the well-being of its driver-partners and has processes in place to address their concerns.
