PARIS, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- France's consumer price index (CPI), a key gauge of inflation, decreased 0.3 percent in September after registering a 0.5-percent growth in August, official figures showed on Tuesday.

The downturn last month stemmed mainly from a 1.3-percent decline in costs in services, which was not totally compensated by the seasonal increase of prices of manufactured products linked with the end of summer sales, said the country's National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies in its monthly economic report.

At the end of September, costs of manufactured goods rose by 1.5 percent as prices of clothing and shoes jumped by 8.6 percent.

After recording a stable trend in August, energy prices rose by 0.3 percent last month, while foods costs were less dynamic over the period, pulled down by a 2.5-percent decrease in fresh food prices.

French officials had set the inflation rate at 1.4 percent for the whole year of 2019 compared to 1.8 percent reported a year earlier.
