LUANDA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced Friday that it has granted 1 million U.S. dollars to boost a children's food and nutrition security program in Angola's central Bie Province.

In a press release posted on its website, AfDB indicates that the amount is from a special relief fund to the government of Angola in response to a prevailing drought that has caused severe malnutrition in the region.

The bank's funding which was approved on Sept. 23 aims to complement a separate therapeutic and supplemental feeding program for vulnerable households with children between 6 months and 4 years of age in Angola's Bie.

Bie is the Angolan province with the highest prevalence of chronic malnutrition, with 51 percent, which is far above the national average of 38 percent, according to indicators quoted in the AfDB statement.
