TUNIS, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian authorities foiled on Saturday illegal immigration attempts to cross the Mediterranean towards the Italian coast, the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, these attempts were foiled by the coast guard units in the capital Tunis and provinces of Ariana, Mahdia and Monastir.

"A total of 48 individuals, aged between 20 and 54, have been arrested while they tried to cross the Mediterranean to Italy," read a ministry statement.

Large sums of money in Tunisian dinar and foreign currencies have been seized during this operation.

Tunisia, located in the central Mediterranean, is one of the main points of access to the Europe through irregular channels.
