BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday congratulated Alberto Fernandez, winner of Argentina's presidential elections, and expressed its willingness to work with the new government.

"Congratulations to President-elect @alferdez on his election," IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva tweeted. "We look forward to engaging with his administration to tackle Argentina's economic challenges and promote inclusive and sustainable growth that benefits all Argentinians."

Fernandez, leader of the opposition Everyone's Front coalition, obtained nearly 48 percent of the vote, compared with incumbent President Mauricio Macri's nearly 41 percent, according to the National Electoral Directorate.

Macri's government signed a massive loan package worth of 57 billion U.S. dollars with the IMF in 2018, the biggest loan in the IMF's history.

Georgieva earlier said that the IMF was keen to see the outcome of the elections and what type of policy framework Argentina's government would put in place.

Argentina's transition of power has raised fears of debt default in international markets.

Argentina's Central Bank Monday announced stricter currency exchange controls to prevent capital flight, saying Argentina's foreign reserves have fallen by 22 billion dollars since primary elections in August.
