GAZA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Al-Quds Brigades, military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, said on Saturday that it remains highly alert to Israel's threats to wage a war on the Gaza Strip.

The Islamist group made the remarks in a statement sent to reporters after an intensive round of overnight airstrikes by Israel on Gaza.

"All these threats are only increasing our determination to remain steadfast and continue to protect our people and our struggle," the statement said.

"If the occupier (Israel) does anything foolish against our people, the response will be wide. We won't keep our people living under the repeated Zionist threats," it added.

The overnight Israeli airstrikes, in response to a barrage of rockets on Friday night from Gaza into southern Israel, killed a 27-year-old Palestinian and injured two others.

Israeli media said Israeli leaders ordered a harsh response to the rocket attack from Gaza, even if it means a large-scale offensive on the Palestinian enclave.

Over the past few months, Egypt, the United Nations and Qatar have been trying to mediate cease-fire understandings between the Hamas-led militant groups and Israel.
