Latvia, Belarus agree to cooperate in attracting rail freight

RIGA, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The national railway companies of Latvia and Belarus will cooperate to attract new kinds of rail freight and develop new logistics services for their existing and potential clients, Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railways) informed.

Latvijas Dzelzcels acting CEO Maris Kleinbergs and Vladimir Morozov, head of the Belarusian Railway, reached the agreement on cooperation during a meeting in Riga on Wednesday.

The talks of the heads of the Latvian and Belarusian rail companies focused on current freight shipping operations and possibilities to increase them. The railway officials also agreed on cooperation in marketing to attract new kinds of freight, diversify the existing freight base, as well as develop new logistics services and a competitive policy for track access charges.

While shipping of oil products between Belarus and Latvia decreased during the first nine months of this year, a significant increase was recorded in transportation of timber, which rose 34.6 percent against the first nine months of 2018. All in all, 18.4 million tons of various freight were shipped between Belarus and Latvia in the nine-month period, down 16.8 percent on year.

Meanwhile, rail passenger traffic has tended to grow over the past year. During the first nine months of 2019, the number of passengers carried by rail between Latvia and Belarus rose 15.3 percent against the same period a year ago to 15,500 people.
