BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League (TDSL) on Tuesday held a symposium in Beijing to commemorate the birth centenary of its late leader Cai Xiao.

Born in 1919 in Taiwan, Cai moved to the mainland in 1934 and joined the Red Army in 1937. He later served successively in the field army, the air force, and the former General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Cai was chairman of the Council of TDSL's general office from 1979 to 1983 and a member of the 10th and 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Cai was an outstanding CPC member, an excellent military commander and political worker of the people's army and a distinguished leader of the TDSL, said Su Hui, chairperson of the TDSL Central Committee during the symposium.

Su stressed that the best way to commemorate Cai is to carry on the cause started by TDSL pioneers, remain true to the original aspiration, and continue to move forward hand in hand.

The symposium also celebrated the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the TDSL.

Founded in 1947, the league is one of the eight non-Communist political parties in the Chinese mainland. It consists of Taiwanese living in the mainland.
