NEW DELHI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and eight others injured after two passenger vehicles collided head-on in a deadly road accident in India's western state of Rajasthan, police said Thursday.

The accident took place Wednesday night when a mini-bus and a jeep collided at Khatushyam-Reengas town in Sikar district, about 80 km north of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.

"The injured were immediately removed to the nearest hospital, out of which five of them were referred to Jaipur in critical condition," said a police official, adding that both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision.

Following the accident police teams and locals rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has expressed grief over deaths in the accident.

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May God give them strength to bear this terrible loss. I pray for speedy recovery of those injured," said Gehlot on twitter.

Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place everyday in India due to road accidents.

On Tuesday, seven people were killed when a jeep carrying passengers collided with goods truck in Bikaner district of the state.
