S. African scholar welcomes BRICS summit declaration

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- A South African scholar welcomed the just ended BRICS summit, saying the declaration speak to the issues which are relevant to the global community.

Ashraf Patel, digital economy and development associate at Institute for Global Dialogue, told Xinhua that the summit was a success against the background of difficult and complex global headwinds.

"The success of the summit and the attendance of all leaders showing a growing coherence and institutionalization of BRICS as a force in diversifying global political and economic power and discourse," he said.

"The resolutions on supporting multilateral and global equity in trade, finance and investment was very positive. "

"The New Development Bank and its growth and new lending is encouraging and commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals is a sign of responsible leadership in a complex world," he said.

Patel said BRICS is expanding and making progress in many facets, including infrastructure investment, education, science, technology.

He emphasized that BRICS agenda should shape the World Trade Organization reform discussions and push more boldly for the trade and development agenda. It should also feed more effectively in the G20 agenda.
