HANOI, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Hosts Vietnam were held to a scoreless draw by the visiting Thailand here on Tuesday in their fifth group match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification second round.

In the 27th minute, Thailand were awarded a penalty but Vietnam's goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a terrific save by using his left foot. Few minutes later, Vietnam put the ball in the net but their goal was rejected as the referee decided that the Thai goalie was fouled.

Despite a flurry of late chances for the visitors in the second half, the game ended 0-0 and Vietnam remain top of Group G with 11 points, having won three of their five matches so far. Thailand, on the other hand, are third in the group with two wins, two draws and one defeat.

As many as 40 teams from Asia have been drawn into eight groups of five teams each for the second round of the qualifiers which will run until June next year.

Eight group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 to be held in China and for the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers slated for September 2020.
