WINDHOEK, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- About 54 percent of neonatal deaths in Namibia are due to prematurity, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Health ministry commemoration of prematurity day, United Nations Children's Fund country representative Rachel Odede said delivering inpatient for premature babies is often a challenge for Namibia.

She said this was because of limited equipment to ensure the survival of these babies and in some cases limited human capacity to deal with the demand.

According to statistics from UNICEF, Neonatal mortality rate for Namibia fell gradually from 30.1 deaths per thousand live births in 1969 to 15.6 deaths per thousand live births in 2018.
