WARSAW, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- A man in the southern Polish city of Krakow was convicted and sentenced to one month in prison for illegally burning wood and coal for heating, local media reported Wednesday.

The conviction is a signal that authorities are showing no tolerance for those breaking anti-smog legislation passed in 2016, which includes a ban on coal and waste-burning for domestic heating, effective as of Sept. 1, 2019.

City watch officers spotted the illegal burning during a regular check-up.

Krakow is one of the major Polish cities most affected by smog, but the ban is expected to improve the city's air quality.
