RABAT, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan authorities arrested an Indian in the Mohammed V international airport in Casablanca over cannabis smuggling, official national radio reported Sunday.

The Indian national, 32, was arrested on Saturday with 4.615 kg of cannabis wrapped in 43 bundles carefully hidden in his backpack, it added.

The suspect was nabbed while he was preparing to leave the north African country on a flight bound for an Arab capital, the radio said.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation in the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the United Nation's Office on Drugs and Crime.

The Moroccan security authorities seized 112 tons and 138 kg of cannabis and its derivatives from Jan. 1 to Sept. 15, according to official statistics.
