DUBLIN, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Ireland has the third highest tertiary education rate among the people aged 30 to 34 in the European Union (EU), according to the latest figures released by the country's national statistics bureau CSO.

In 2018, 56 percent of the 30 to 34-year-olds in Ireland had a third-level education qualification compared with the average rate of 41 percent in the EU for the same year, only after Lithuania (58 percent) and Cyprus (57 percent), said the CSO.

Romania has the lowest tertiary educational attainment level in the EU, which stood at 25 percent in 2018, it said.

The CSO figures released in its Educational Attainment Thematic Report also showed that Ireland has the second highest secondary education rate and the fourth lowest rate of early school leavers in the EU.

In 2018, 94 percent of the 20 to 24-year-olds in Ireland had a secondary education qualification against the 84 percent of the EU's average in the year, only after Croatia (96 percent), said the CSO.

Spain has the lowest secondary education rate in the EU and only 73 percent of the 20 to 24-year-olds in the country attained a secondary education qualification in 2018, it said.

In terms of the rate of early school leavers, Ireland has the fourth lowest rate in the EU, said the CSO.

Early school leavers refer to those aged 18 to 24 who leave education without attaining upper secondary qualification or equivalent.

In 2018, 5 percent of the people in the 18-24 age bracket in Ireland were classified as early school leavers against the 11 percent of the EU's average in the year, it said, adding that Croatia has the lowest rate of early school leavers in the EU, which stood at 3 percent in 2018.
