TIRANA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Albania will review the legislation and take a significant step in addressing violence against women, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Monday, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Rama made this remark at the start of an event held in Tirana to introduce the government's two-year program.

"A group of members of parliament together with the Minister of Justice Etilda Gjonaj have been engaged in a process of reviewing the country's legislation and taking a significant step in addressing violence against women, not only in terms of measures, but also in supporting them," Rama said.

According to Rama, there are many cases where the violence against women has gone through the courtrooms and the perpetrators have been acquitted.

Rama announced that this aspect and all other aspects affecting law in Albania will be effectively and safely addressed by the new justice system that is being established in the country.

Meanwhile, Albanian President Ilir Meta said on a Facebook post that efforts to condemn violence against women and girls should never stop.

"A democratic society cannot evolve without encouraging efforts to empower women, especially without fulfilling the obligations to protect their rights," Meta said.

According to the study "Violence against women and girls in Albania in 2018" published by the country's Institute of Statistics in May 2019, 1 in 3 women or 36.6 percent of women in Albania experienced violence at the time when the study was conducted. The study included 3,443 families and women of the ages of 18-74.
