RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government launched on Monday a nationwide campaign aiming to encourage women to denounce domestic violence, a problem the country has been facing for years.
With the motto "You have a voice," the campaign features advertisements across all media to raise women's awareness of the government's hotline to report domestic violence incidents.
The newly-expanded hotline offers video conferencing support and a service for deaf women, who may have more difficulties reporting domestic violence than others.
In addition, the government will launch a project in January to train police officers to offer specialized care to victims of domestic violence, according to Damares Alves, Brazil's Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights.
Currently, only a small amount of the country's police precincts have the necessary training and facilities to handle domestic violence cases.
Under the new program, however, every precinct will offer access to specialized care for any woman who has suffered from domestic violence, the minister said.
