DUBLIN, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The number of overseas visitors to Ireland totalled 956,800 in October, up by 2.5 percent compared with the same month last year, according to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Tuesday.

In the month, the number of visitors from Britain increased by 4.2 percent year-on-year to 336,400 while the number of visitors from European countries other than Britain went up by 8.3 percent over a year ago to 355,900, said the CSO.

The CSO figures also showed that the number of visitors from the United States and Canada in October 2019 decreased by 8.8 percent over October 2018 to 208,800 while the number of visitors from other parts of the world rose by 4.3 percent year-on-year to 55,700.

During the first ten months of this year, a total of 9.34 million overseas residents visited Ireland, up by 2.2 percent compared with the same period last year, said the CSO.

The drop in the October number of visitors to Ireland from the United States and Canada was due to the decision by Norwegian Air Shuttle (or simply called Norwegian) to discontinue its transatlantic services in September 2018, said Tourism Ireland.

Norwegian Air Shuttle is a budget airline of Norway, which has a 100-percent-owned subsidiary headquartered in Dublin, offering transatlantic flights between Ireland and North America.

"The decision by Norwegian...meant the removal of almost of 5,300 airline seats per week between North America and Ireland," said Tourism Ireland.
