BISSAU, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- A presidential election run-off is expected to take place on Dec. 29 in Guinea-Bissau, according to the provisional results published Wednesday by the National Election Commission of Guinea-Bissau (NEC).

Former prime ministers Domingos Simoes Pereira and Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who received 40.13 percent and 27.65 percent of the votes respectively, will compete for the presidency, according to the NEC.

Pereira is supported by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) while Embalo is the candidate of the Movement for Democratic Alternation (MADEM-G15).

If no one receives more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round that took place on Sunday, a run-off is scheduled for Dec. 29, according to NEC rules.

More than 200 observers from the African Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and the Economic Community of West African States, as well as 422 others from the civil society, followed the process of the first round voting.

The head of the African Union observation mission Joaquim Rafael Branco said Monday that the first round of the presidential election was a "festival of transparency".
