TAIPEI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A major annual reading festival, featuring a carnival and a book market, kicked off Thursday in Taiwan and will last until the end of December.

Public libraries and schools in the 22 cities and counties across the island will hold activities to promote reading, particularly among children, said the island's education authority.

One of the event's highlights will be a major carnival in a park in Taipei on Dec. 7 including activities such as music performances, arts and crafts displays and storytelling.

A total of 41 storytelling tents will be erected in the park to present children's stories in Chinese, English and the Hakka and Minnan dialects.

The carnival will also have a book market, at which 22 publishers will sell their books.

In 2018, there were more than 90 million visits to public libraries across the island, according to the education authority.

The event aims to encourage parents to play a bigger part in fostering children's reading habits.
