KUNMING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Border police in southwest China's Yunnan Province have captured five suspects for smuggling 20 tonnes of frozen beef into China, local authorities said Friday.
After receiving a tip-off, police at the China-Vietnam border county of Maguan intercepted 10 suspected off-road vehicles in Jinchang Township on Nov. 6, from which they seized a total of 20 tonnes of frozen beef.
The suspects confessed that the frozen meat was smuggled from Vietnam and lacked the necessary paperwork.
Further investigation is underway.
Meat smuggling has been a frequent occurrence in Maguan County in recent years, and local police have been stepping up efforts to crack down on such cases.
