HARARE, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Low-cost carrier Fastjet Zimbabwe said on Friday it is ready to launch flights between the country's second largest city of Bulawayo to Johannesburg, South Africa, next month.
Starting Dec. 5, Fastjet will have 22 flights linking the two cities per week, including double daily flights from Monday to Friday.
The airline currently flies to a small number of destinations throughout Zimbabwe and to Johannesburg.
Fastjet Zimbabwe chief executive officer Joao Sousa said the airline has received tremendous stakeholder support ahead of the launch.
"Since the announcement of the new route, we have been overwhelmed with positive sentiment and backing from a wide spectrum of local and international supporters and business leaders, appreciating the economic and social benefits the new route will pave for everyone," he said.
Sousa said Bulawayo has the potential and capacity to be one of the fastest-growing cities in sub-Saharan Africa, and that Fastjet Zimbabwe's move is associated with the positive outlook.
Recently, South Africa's government-owned airline, SA Express, launched its flights on the same route.
Last month, Fastjet announced the closure of its Mozambique unit amid "ongoing supply and demand challenges."
The company halted operations in Tanzania in 2018, leaving Fastjet Zimbabwe its only operating airline.
