MADRID, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- In October, Spain received 7.6 million international tourists and registered an increase in tourism revenue, according to data published on Monday by the Spanish Statistical Office.

The number of tourists visiting Spain was slightly (0.3 percent) down year-on-year, mostly due to the lower number of British and German tourists.

Spain welcomed 1.7 million British tourists (21.7 percent of the total) in October 2019, 4.4 percent fewer than in the same month last year. The respective figures for German tourists were 1.1 million and minus 8.3 percent.

These drops were somewhat offset by a 17.2 percent increase in the number of Russian and a 5.5 percent increase in the number of Swiss visitors.

In October, international tourists' average length of stay dropped by 0.3 days to 6.8 days, while their spending increased by 2.5 percent year-on-year to 8,367 million euros (9,264 million U.S. dollars). Their average daily spending increased by 6.5 percent to 161 euros.

Despite the violent street protests seen in Barcelona in northeast Spain in the second half of October, the Catalan region continues to be most popular destination for foreign visitors, accounting for 22.2 percent of all visitors to Spain in October.
